The Wonders of Martial Arts for Children

Aug 10, 2023

Unleashing Brilliance: Why Martial Arts is a Must for Every Child

In our search to sculpt well-rounded, confident children, we often look towards activities that holistically contribute to their physical, mental, and emotional growth. Martial arts emerge as a beacon in this quest.

Martial arts, for many, evoke images of high-octane fight sequences from movies or perhaps distant memories of school-time karate classes. However, in the realm of child development, these ancient practices hold the promise of a bright future. At the heart of martial arts lie discipline, respect, and self-improvement – three pillars that can underpin a child’s upbringing.

Children, by nature, are balls of energy, constantly seeking outlets for their boundless enthusiasm. Martial arts offer an excellent channel for this vitality, ensuring kids remain active, agile, and fit. Regular sessions encompass cardiovascular exercises, flexibility drills, and strength training, laying the foundation for a healthier adulthood.

Beyond the physical, martial arts are an education in self-discipline. Each form, be it Taekwondo, Karate, or Judo, comes with its rituals and traditions. Respect for the sensei (teacher), honour for the dojo (training hall), and discipline in practice are all par for the course. In an era where traditional values often take a back seat, these arts instil respect and discipline in young minds.

The tiered nature of martial arts, usually symbolised by coloured belts, introduces children to the concepts of goals, achievements, and progression. Every new belt earned is a confidence boost, a testament to their hard work and dedication. This structure not only fuels ambition but also teaches children the virtues of persistence and perseverance.

In our ever-connected world, bullying, unfortunately, has found new, digital avenues. Equipping children with martial arts training arms them with more than just self-defence techniques. It gives them confidence, teaches them the importance of non-violence, and ensures they never feel powerless in challenging situations.

Lastly, dojos are social hubs. Here, children interact with peers, learn the essence of teamwork, forge new friendships, and develop social skills that benefit them outside these training halls.

In essence, the journey through martial arts is a kaleidoscope of growth opportunities for children, shaping them into confident, respectful, and healthy individuals.

This is such a fantastic club. My boys are age 11 and 14 and both have special needs. Liam the coach listened to what their needs were and was very understanding. They normally do not stick at anything for long but they started in September and just love going. They get very good support and guidance on techniques from Liam and the other coaches but they also get lots of praise for making progress and this has meant that both boys have grown in confidence and self esteem which is something they both struggle with. They have both worked hard towards their gradings and have gone on to their next level of belt. This class is fun, supportive and a great way for my boys to get fit and learn a new skill. Very highly recommend these classes.

My daughter loves her kickboxing sessions, she has learnt so much from her coaches, Ven, Phil and Dan. It’s really helped with her confidence in taking part in activities with older children, currently the youngest in the session. The coaches have been great at making her feel comfortable and keeping her engaged in learning new and important life skills.
